“For me, architecture is where imagination meets purpose—where spaces can inspire wonder, invite connection, and stand the test of time. I’m drawn to exploring ideas outside the box and weaving together influences in unexpected ways to create designs that feel both unique and meaningful.”

Michael Kendall, AIA

Michael received his Bachelors of Science in Architectural Studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his Masters of Architectural Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Since joining Wheeler Kearns Architects in 2013, Michael has been an essential part of the team, thoughtfully designing projects that respond to both client needs and the unique qualities of each site. His work spans nonprofit food pantries, mid-rise residences, and inventive single-family homes. He has helped transform urban environments with projects like Milwaukee Belden (TOD), a pair of high-rise structures that create a central community plaza, and the Bosworth Townhomes, where layered garden terraces rise above parking to maximize outdoor space.

Michael has also advanced the missions of nonprofit clients through projects such as Nourishing Hope – The Hub, transforming a 10,000 sf building into a welcoming space with social services and Chicago’s first food pantry online-ordering and pick-up system, as well as Nourishing Hope – HQ and Care for Real II. His experience includes the award-winning Granor Greenhouse, a multi-functional glass structure that serves as a teaching tool, social condenser, and farm production facility. His residential portfolio reflects site-driven design, from the Sawyer Retreat perched above the treetops on a bluff to Ravine House II, which opens dramatically to let a ravine flow through its center.

When he’s not in the studio, he enjoys golfing, traveling, and exploring his Roscoe Village neighborhood with his wife and son.
