This summer, Wheeler Kearns Architects deployed the first iteration of “WKA-LIFT” – an initiative to bolster members of communities historically underrepresented in the field of architecture. Our aim is to increase diversity of all kinds – race, gender, sexual orientation, physical abilities, and religious practices – in the field of architecture.
The two-week workshop provided four current high school students with an unparalleled level of access to our architecture practice and a holistic view of the design profession. Students participated in design conversations for active projects, completed hands-on design exercises and joined in site tours of projects under construction. The goal is to mentor students through multiple years and help aspiring designers successfully apply to architecture or design schools.
