A Redefined Welcome

Inside the University of Chicago’s I-House Dormitory and Lecture Hall, a historic 1932 structure designed by Holabird & Root, a simple yet strategic re-orientation of the main reception space significantly enhances both security and accessibility.

Previously, visitors could enter the building’s secure perimeter before reaching the reception area. The new design introduces an accessible entry from the vestibule to the secure reception space, allowing for proper authorization before entering the residence hall. This crucial touchpoint is now integral to the University’s security strategy and provides a warm welcome for lecture attendees. The prestigious Assembly Hall, which has hosted many world leaders, previously lacked an easily accessible entry; however, with the addition of an automated door, appropriate turning radii, and a new accessible restroom, lecture attendees are now well accommodated.

The new reception desk area complements the existing building, featuring paneling that matches the historic lounge across the hall. New metal screening harmonizes with existing bronze elements, while the enlarged package storage area meets the modern needs of students and front desk staff. Mailboxes, replica pendants, and other infrastructure were relocated to enhance this new welcome sequence.
